How do you guys handle the anxiety of a new job? I’ve been at my new firm about 2 months but I’m still nervous all day, everyday and feeling like I’m going to get fired. I haven’t received much feedback, either positive or negative, and my anxiety is filling in the gap. I’m in weekly therapy and I’m on anti-anxiety medication which typically helps but the extra stress of new has me off kilter. I’m considering adding another med but adjusting to new meds is hard.

No feedback = good thing. People are busy, if u don’t hear anything you can generally assume what u are doing is fine

If you’re truly seeking external validation, seek Jesus. Jesus will heal you internally. God Bless.

Agree. Jesus is the only truth, way, and the life. He is the only reason I can get through the long days. In the end I know everything is going to turn out for my good regardless of how things look in the short term. If I didn’t have him I don’t think I would have lasted this long in big law. But most importantly, I realize the job and the money are not the point. If I lost my job, I would be okay too because I have Him. Jesus is the answer and the most precious treasure. May the Lord heal you from your anxiety. And may you be very successful in your job. But most importantly may you find Him.

I’m on anxiety medicine. After trying various other methods therapist recommended I see a psychiatrist, who then recommended anxiety medicine. She explained the medicine to me in great detail. And I must say, after being apprehensive, I gave it a try because the anxiety was getting to me too much. It has done wonders for me. I can better focus on my work instead of letting my anxiety take me into a spiral.

I’ve been struggling with this exact situation although I’ve been at my new firm longer now. I also tried new meds (for anxiety and adhd) with mixed results. I ended up in a somewhat better spot with one new med but the process of testing out different meds was a rocky process so I understand your hesitation. What also helped me was working with my therapist to figure out why my brain went to worst case scenarios in the absence of feedback. Understanding that the anxiety filling in the gaps is a maladaptive protective mechanism was really helpful for me to begin pushing back against it.

The biggest thing that helped me get over chronic anxiety was realizing that the worst thing rarely, if ever, happens and that the worst things that do happen tend to be totally unpredictable anyway, but that in any event, I've always handled them and gotten through them just fine!

It's simple and may not work for other people but I couldn't keep torturing myself so I let it all go and just focused on what was in front of me. What's the next step you need to do at work or for your career? That's all that matters and you can handle that.

Ask yourself “what the worst that can happen”. Answer is likely, I lose my job. Okay, if this happens (which it likely won’t) what do you do? You find another. Regardless you remind yourself that you can handle the outcome and keep putting in the work to be a great lawyer

Medicine isn’t going to help a severe lack of confidence. Maybe try a career coach? If you have confidence that you were hired for a reason and that you are a damn good lawyer, you’ll be less anxious about whether people are perceiving you as those things. Half the successful people in this world got that way because they have delusional levels of confidence.

Does the addition of “(level) II” make a difference to anybody? I am the only marketing communications specialist for a lead child-welfare nonprofit. We oversee four counties in two circuits. Director recently gave me add’l merit-based raise (after my annual raise, been here 14 months) & slight title change to Marketing Comm Specialist II. No plans to add a level 1 (would be lower) specialist but will add level 1 engagement specialist to team. Should I update resume/cards or is this confusing?
