In my opinion, be upfront about what you are looking for to make a move. Most of our sign on bonuses are either to bridge the gap between a candidates targeted salary and the number we are coming in at.. or for highly sought after candidates with niche skills. As a practice, we are selective about using sign on bonuses and instead prefer to pay fair and competitive wages up front.
Good luck.
A friend of mine said she’d be loosing out on her bonus from the company she’s leaving and not eligible for one at the hiring company that year, can you compensate my lost bonus with a sign on bonus?
- You can just plainly ask if there’s a sign on bonus on the table.
- You can use competing offers and ask to match them.
- You can say you’d be losing out on bonus and equity from your current employer but be prepared to show proof. My current employer (F25) asked for screen shots of my Fidelity accounts PLUS written proof of my current bonus structure. Once I gave them the appropriate documentation, they matched the amounts plus added 25%.
And payment upfront is a no, exceptions for relocation on a case by case basis.
Hard to receive before start date because lot can happen between now and then. Why do you need it before start date? Do you have big expenses coming up or is the start date very far away?
