When this happened post recession I would bounce back alot better and kept applying in this third wave of job apocalypse each time I learn something new from it, first knew nothing sent over 500k apps. I will always remember that even reaching out to hiring managers to hear things like there is no job. Second time while in my role storing as much as feasible in a high yield savings account, applying and using spreadsheet tracking. Lots more ghosting, no follow up not even can responses and when u do months after applying because they know people are desperate. This third time, I research the company, amount of applicants, reviews and how many verbatim qualifications I match. Let me provide tips, when u feel down and worthless, believe me I've been there. Take the next day off, dont apply anywhere do something u love and come back to it. That nagging anxiety of mass applying and no call backs after amazing interviews can be soul destroying, I know how u feel. I had an amazing interview, made it to the point of offer, had their HR person ask me " So, would you like the role" my exact response " if they will have me" they submit me only to tell me they are going with someone else. Right now this is ego driven for companies. They enjoy the markets desperation but remember u can find something maybe not the best pay or longest length but you won't be destitute in the street. Something will open before anything gets that dire and if its looking that way, maybe a new place or location is the solution. People moved for work alot back in the day so just look at things from realistic perspective.
Rising Star
I think to the company's that I have interviewed with, and the couple of very positive discovery calls that I have had with recruiters who were very kind in telling me the value that they see in my experience. During the longer periods of silence I remind myself of the fact that several hundred thousand people have been laid off in the last couple years, the market really is that bad, and you arent alone.
What i choose to do is compartmentalization. Never let personal feelings intrude when your professional life is in the balance. Feelings are for personal life. Cold, hard facts for professional life.
No job is worth an ounce of your emotions.
It has served me well during a 7 month search that just this week paid off.
Hello dear
Coffee ice cream
It's a numbers game, much like sales. You won't close the deal all the time, or even anywhere near it, but when it happens, there's the payout.
I let myself be sad for a moment, just staring at the ceiling or in the window. Very often just a walk helps. At the same time, I don’t stop applying until I get the desired offer. Even if the interview goes very well, unfortunately, you can still be ghosted :(
In Same boat from last 2 months
Antidepressants
I tried it... the fact the you need 2 weeks to worst first before feeling better made me stop it.
Acknowledging those emotions and being able to express them in words is a good step, which you’ve already taken
I repeat what others have said, don’t take it personally, separate your work life from your personal life. You are NOT defined by your career path, how much you earn, your job title, how quickly you can get a job etc.
Doubly so, since we’re seeing the worst economy in decades for a lot of industries.
These are superficial symptoms of the modern world, don’t allow them to swallow your whole life.
But anyway sorry for the probably impractical advice from an unemployed autist xD
You remind yourself that it's out of your control and one day we will all die, so other ppls opinions simply do not matter.
Cultivate a mental attitude of "I don't give a f#ck".
I personally felt like it’s a number game as well. Additionally I would only try to think about what I could have done better in the interview, but the rest I would let go.
If I gave a great interview, I truly did my best which means I can rest easy whether I get the job or not.
I don't know what to do now out of funds don't know how to pay my house
I was in that situation for months (almost a year) after being laid off from my gov design job. I was terrified & hanging by a tiny tinny thread from hitting absolute bankruptcy. I was behind on credit cards, personal loans and about to be late on my mortgage. PB&J sandwiches for dinner (my kids didn’t mind LOL). What saved me (besides selling any replaceable belongings). I set up a profile and applied to every AI TRAINER JOB I could qualify for. Let me say this - YOU CAN MAKE SOME BANK $$,$$$ doing this. Many companies pay every week. I was earning $50-$125 per hour as an “AI TRAINER” training AI how to design in CAD, Krita, & Figma. FYI I’m not dropping references codes or trying to sign you up (many individuals do that). The biggest lesson I learned with the AI Training jobs was, DO NOT STICK TO JUST ONE! Have at least 2-3 going at the same time. These projects can end suddenly with less than 24 hrs notice and you’ll end up in the same situation you’re in now. Wishing you the best of luck in your job search. I’ve never replied to any of the posts before, but I 100% could relate to your short comment. 😌 plus I had burned though my retirement as well and I’m almost 50-scary situation!
You have to take it as, it is what it is, nothing you can do to change what happened, just keep moving foward. Stay away from the dark!
You start with quick wins that are low on Maslow's hierachy of needd
- good food
- strong drinks
- safe drugs
- fun night out
- relaxed drive
- physically draining activities
- games
etc
Plan your days around these dopamine spikes, or be spontaneous whichever works. Space them out enough so that you don't get numbed out or overly dependent on these getaways either. You want to feel there's enough of a motivation to get through the next day.
Once you feel stablized, you can/should go further up to actualization and all the fancy schmancy goal settings but by then, you should be sorted out.
Set zero expectations.
