It was easy for me. My wife had a stroke and heart attack at 35. She isn’t going to live a long life. We decided to enjoy it now. Do you want to enjoy travel when your knees and bones ache at 65 or when you are young and vibrant?
I’ve wanted to travel my entire life, so it was an easy decision for me. I save for my future while still being able to travel now. We only get one life to live, and I’m going to spend mine traveling.
Do both. Make smart financial decisions every day, grocery shop, make your own meals and coffees, skip the $18 cocktails when you go out to dinner, resist the urge to buy that new (fill in the blank), stop taking ubers, etc.
If you need to, alternate years. Year A: stack and save as much as you possibly can, invest a good portion of it, only take an affordable domestic trip. Year B: stack and save as much as you possibly can and use a good portion of that to fund an amazing international trip to a bucket list location.
You should always be saving and investing, but it’s okay to use some of that savings on enjoying life.
Life is short. You aren't guaranteed to reach retirement age. It is important to balance saving for the future with living a life in the present that is worth living. I spent three years traveling around the world as a digital nomad and it was the best thing I ever did. I still travel constantly because it's what I love to do, Even if it means other aspects of my lifestyle take the hit.
Having recently traveled internationally I would do it now. It is often very active and some of the things I’ve gotten to do will be impossible later in life. The experiences you have will make you able to relate to others and generally wiser. Sometimes it even leads to the realization that you’d rather live somewhere else, which is better to have in your 20s than 60s
I try to do a mix—make sure I’m getting the full company match in my 401k and contribute to my Roth IRA when I have extra money. Otherwise, I try to go on 1-2 trips per year and know what I want to splurge on rather than splurging the entire trip
