I have. Caveat, my specialization is transfer pricing but its impossible to do that on the side independent of a major firm. Tax preparation seems to be easier to do on the side.

If you come from transfer pricing I would not recommend setting up shop in small client tax compliance. The data they send is a mess.
I’d recommend picking a Tax niche and diving deep into it. Be very honest with yourself about who your ideal clients are and let the book grow over time. You’ll be able to spend much less time keeping up with regulation changes and develop a brand that stands for something if you run a boutique firm.
There are all types. Check out the Thriveal podcast. Jason Blumer talks about niche firms quite a bit. They exist for dentist offices, content creators, hair salons, franchised restaurants, etc. Could be anything you want it to be. Key is to find a niche that you’d be interested in developing a deep knowledge of.
