People gotta work. You do you.
It can come across “desperate”.
There’s also unconscious bias toward the unemployed—there’s a reason they are so, laziness, character deficiency, less desirable as a candidate…
The world’s an unfair place, why risk putting yourself in a less desirable light.
Most people reach out with purpose to recruiters, and their network contacts to find work opportunities. The passive, low effort “hey look at me, I need help” doesn’t seem like the best way to go.
Your answer most closely mirrors my thought at the time of my original post. It does seem though that other people have had some level of success using this status. Since I’m a freelancer I’m considering experimenting with this now to see if anyone bites.
It shows people that you’re open to work?
Was a snob about it until I got laid off for the first time last year. Recruiters (not a lot but more than before in the last 2 years ) and old contacts reached out. I got my current job from a mutual old contact because of it and he was like oh hey they worked at my old company and are open to work. I’m not ashamed of it anymore.
It's helped me get a lot of freelance work. Recruiters have told me that they'll contact those who are open to work prior to candidates who may or may not be looking.
Maybe ask a recruiter! It shouldn’t matter how those with jobs feel about it!
So many layoffs in the last couple of years, it’s tough out there.
I try to show a lot of grace and give as much help as I can to those looking for work.
Imagine in old times if the king handed out stickers that said ‘witch’ and told accused witches to slap them on their forehead, and they did. That’s LinkedIn’s ‘open to work’ status
Careful, your cackle is showing
I put in on all the time as I’m freelancing and technically always open to work - why not? Many recruiters see it and contracted me
I’m glad to hear people are having success with it.
I’ve been in the camp of thinking it doesn’t ‘look good’. I don’t personally assign any poor traits to those who do it, I’ve been laid off myself. But… it’s undeniable that pursuing a career includes a certain level being performative, whether we like it or not. Appearance does matter.
I posed this question in an open ended way so that I could be challenged on this mode of thought.
I’m genuinely happy that it can work for some recruiters and talent the way it’s intended.
I’ve totally warmed up to it and actually helpful when looking for freelancers - it shows strength and vulnerability, especially when the resume is solid. Managing your profile keeping up to date is great. 😊
I used once and it landed me a long lasting gig after an old coworker saw and contacted me. Also saves recruiters a lot of time to be able to contact people that are clearly available
LinkedIn sucks donkey dick. Just an Awful unfiltered platform that brings out the worst in humanity.
