How do you stop feeling like you're dragging the team down when you're new? I’m still figuring out our tech stack, and everything takes me forever to get done. My lead says I’m doing fine, but I still feel like I’m in the way because I’m so much slower than the seniors. Is it common to feel this way at first?

It is. You are in what i I call the “Firehose” phase, because you’re being bombarded by a high intensity blast of information. And just like standing in front of a firehose, it’s overwhelming and a bit painful.

Take good notes. Ask lots of questions. Write down a few things you’ve learned each day in a dedicated place. Every week or so go back and read the things you wrote. That will remind you of them, which helps lock in the knowledge, and can encourage you because you’ll see how much you ARE growing and learning in the role.

You have a new hire grace period, enjoy it while it lasts! If the team lead especially says all is going well, believe it. Take the desire to learn and grow, but being hard on yourself doesn’t serve a purpose.

Feeling like this means you care and you’re paying attention. That’s a good sign, not a bad one.

I love riding the Grace period, I remember dancing on the sidewalk when I joined the last job. You just take your time and pace yourself

Started at a big firm in July with high hopes- in the career path I wanted and I would be joining with other new grads.
After onboarding, it’s as if my team forgets about us every day. The training is non existent, there doesn’t seem to be any initiative to invest in new hires, my manager scolds me for not knowing enough yet gives no direction. I don’t want to waste time (colleagues mentioned it doesn’t get much better from here). Do I embrace the suck or look for other opportunities?

Hi everyone,

Not long ago I obtained bachelors and in the interim I have been working at Morgan Stanley. I started thinking about next steps for my education and initial thought was to just go straight to MBA but then I started hearing about people with BS in Business and Masters in different areas not that closely related. Is it even possible to to do for instance masters in law if I only have bs in business or for example masters in something related to renewable energy or so?

I desperately need help/guidance from someone, I tried going to some therapists but they just emphasize antidepressants.

Below are my thoughts rn: Man, I’m 28 and such a bum. I work a job I hate, I have no social circle. I have never had a gf. All these things are so challenging because I’m autistic. I can’t change that. What’s the point of living when society treats ppl like me like I don’t matter. Maybe I should just take a bunch of sleeping pills so I don’t have to deal with life anymore.

I'm a SWE from Italy. Love my country but salary and taxes here are outrageous. Got 2yrs experience in fullstack and data science, 2masters, a peer reviewed paper and outperform all my peers for 24k€ a year.
I'm thinkin about landing a remote SWE job (leetcoding and building a portfolio this summer).
Have you got some advice? Is it possible to work for US remotely without visa? What other countries pay well? Is it possible to land a 100k$+ with this kind of experience and working from Italy?

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!
