Advice needed - boyfriend has almost 3.5 years of finance experience at a bank. Interviewed for PwC valuation senior associate and now recruiter says they want to hire him at “experienced associate” because he has no valuation experience. Is this too big of a step backwards in career? Should he push back and see if it gets him anywhere? If he does accept Associate, is it reasonable to ask for written, definitive timeline (1 year?) for promo to Senior upon meeting standards? Help!

Your previous employer can’t disclose any more than your title and dates of employment (if you live in the US), so the reason why you were terminated shouldn’t matter. Come up with any plausible reason for why you’re no longer at the firm, interview well, and you’ll be fine
Do not share with others that you left due to poor performance
I mean, who knows why you left the firm?… I left as a manager, no one asked me for any references at any firm. I think the resume speaks for itself. Unless there is something I’m missing…
If you are qualified for the position and the best candidate it shouldn’t matter. In a long career many of us will be fired multiple times often due to no fault of our own. Companies know that the big firm PA gig has lots of turnover.
Everyone I know who was offed in the pandemic crush of 2020/2021 was hired very quickly by other firms
Drop it off your resume.
That’s true and you can always ask your friends to be your coworkers reference
In my opinion resumes are stupid and I wish we could get past using them. Send me your education, letters or recommendation ROCK! I have lied on all of mine. I work for me now, so I do not care. I want to meet you and talk.
They cannot comment on your performance. They can only verify dates, salary, and eligible for rehire.
FYI. Many accounting firms will not rehire, if one leaves. Therefore, you can note you left the firm for what ever reason you choose to share.
That being said, what was the poor performance? Skills, billable hours, something else. Take a good look at why and find a way to address the issue(s) so they don’t follow you into your next role.
If you need skills, find a mentor and/or consider smaller firms. They are great teaching and starting points.
Good luck.
