You’re a writer. They’re asking for words. And you’re not leaping at a chance to show them what you can do with with some?
That’s only part of it. And your resume already covers that, so spend more time on the part about them and the opportunity. Don’t just repeat what’s in your experience section. Give them a bit of a POV
Write it, ask chatGPT to refine it, then refine it yourself some more.
Summarize your career highlights and why you’re a good fit using the language in the job listing back at them. Don’t spend more than 20 minutes on it, and once you have a strong base, all you need to really do is change the salutation and details to match the next role.
The recruiter is going to scan it, they may have AI filters that read it, but the letters never get sent to our hiring managers.
Unless it’s a job I would die for, I don’t write cover letters. If I do, I use a variation of one I have on hand and tweak it slightly. In 2025 requiring a cover letter is a red flag imo

So easy to write a basic cover letter and reuse by tweaking some bullet points in the body.
It’s a read out loud of the resume. Cover letter is the convo of the resume. It’s kind of a waste the idea is it’s. Pre interview. I’d have a basic one that goes with your resume and not specific for a job

Cover letters are becoming obsolete. If a recruiter requests a cover letter but later admits they don’t need one, it’s likely due to a system setting on the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) that was inadvertently left on. If you ever find yourself writing a cover letter in the future, I highly recommend using ChatGPT as a tool to save time. I personally use it daily in my job.
This was my first instinct too! That they accidentally set it as “required” - but even if it was an accident, I guess that can work in our favor
I use my cover page to showcase transferable skill sets and personality.
Maybe take this opportunity to write a great one that can be repurposed for other job applications (with some subtle tweaks)? Then you’ve got one ready to go should the need arise. But agreed overall that they’re a pain.
