Yeah, sure, but on Monday, ok chief? 🤣
Difficult bosses, difficult clients, difficult partners, terrible briefs and terrible agencies - this not something anyone wants to spend their weekend thinking about.
Years ago: an office of Mullen. I was in the President’s office to take a call from the largest division of the agency’s largest client, a national bank. He said, “You give me a testimonial campaign or I’m finding a new agency <click>.” We had 3 months to conceive, sell, produce, plan, and air a national integrated campaign. Or we’d implode. The entire agency came together. We really listened to what the client was asking for, then figured out how to deliver on it and also deliver on our mandate of smart, differentiating work. We developed a strategy (it came from the creative group), an idea everyone could get their heads around, and most important a striking, flexible, first-person visual approach that wasn’t embarrassing talking heads on a white cyc. When we presented the campaign—talking through the visual approach, not selling—the CEO said “That’s us.” It ran on schedule. It saved a $120 million account and 175 jobs. The client ran an ad in both Ad Age and Adweek in the campaign format thanking the agency for their hard work. I’ve been in CA and One Show but that ad is one I’m proudest of.
Concept was “I’m with Wachovia” & used actual customers telling their narratives. Producer brought the visual format to the idea. Launch spot to support all business units here: https://writercreativedirector.com/#/wachovia-brand-campaign/.

Typical cco. Head in the sand
My team is pure win.
The secret sauce is replacing the people that don't know what they're doing with people that do.
A functional, high performing team is lovely.
Chief
This. Sharpen the axe to save us all.
I’ve been able to connect with more agency people, which takes me one step closer to my goal of finding an agency to call home.
An agency where I’m certain I’ll have difficult relationships, tough workloads, and perhaps not-so-juicy briefs, but I’ll still be one step closer to my goal of leading a team at an agency one day.
A team of people who will hold me responsible for: the difficulty they have with coworkers, the issues with clients and partners, and the missteps in the process that become the perfect piece of content to share anonymously on a forum, but I will still be one step closer to my goal of contributing to an agency’s success and hopefully inspiring a positive progression within the industry.
My weeks have been hell on top of a wretched year, but everyday I wake up and remind myself of the goals that I’m one step closer to reaching. Cheers!
You have to be strategic. It’s not a simple solution always or just about calling out what’s going on. You have to take into account the climate, who is causing the problem and is it part of a bigger problem. Then you encourage steps for larger change that will make things better for all.
I overcame challenges by quitting and going to a better agency.
That agency didn’t become better by accident. Tell us why it’s a better place to work, please.
We had some great feel-good advice on this with the MadWomen Zoom Cast (Kirsten Rutherford, Danielle Vieth, Liz Cartwright) as part of #thesideshow creativity week - we will be posting our videos - good “comeback” advice from kay&black & more (for free) next week @ TheSideShow.org
