Biggest thing is I don’t want him to be away from school that long but my admin claims there is no other option.
Does the student have an IEP with supports in place for when conflicts arise? Do they have any kind of RJ program at your school? Saturday school with an emphasis on solving problems? It seems like there is ALWAYS alternatives to out of school suspension.
Check out the post about non suspending from Purpose Driven Teaching. She explains how she works with her admin and is getting rid of suspensions for her behavior kids
I am REALLY advocating hard for us to move to restorative practices. It does not seem to be at the “top of the list” yet.
Restorative practices is really the move for a lot of this and implementing Social Emotional Learning curriculum through all grade levels. Maybe start doing your own practices in your class (basics like a mood meter, peer mentoring groups, etc) to get started so then you and present the evidential changes to your admin.
