I was at my last law firm for over 18 months and still felt like an outsider...some people had little groups that alienated other paralegals and it was not great. My first law firm, they immediately made me feel like I belonged...so I think it just depends on the people you work with, the culture they've created at the firm.
As a Paralegal Manager, I try and prevent this from happening. I know first hand what a clique can be like. Most of the time it's because women become fearful of you taking their job or status on the firm. The creation of a paralegal supervisory is too lesson that burden off HR and attorneys. The government first began with this position and slowly law firm saw the need. An
Here for the same reason. I’m personable, but there is tension with a longstanding paralegal at the firm and we’ve had just a few, short (I thought pleasant) interactions. I emailed her today offering to help with a project. We bill so we’re all extremely busy, and being newish, I thought I could take something off her hands. Crickets.
This is like the third attempt at communication with her. Nothing in returns and she and two others are very cliquey—and they’re older women, too and I’m 37. Why is this a thing? It’s annoying and unnecessary and I can tell they’re is gossip. I get along with the attorneys. I’ve been a paralegal for 15 years.
I just realized I’m taking over your post.
It’s different everywhere, but still sort of the same no matter where you go lol.
Put in face time. I’m starting to make myself do the same. I’m sort of secluded, as well.
I hope you settle in soon!
Govt agency is a different species if you are used to the private sector. I interned at the DA's office after returning back to the workforce after having kids, and I noticed most people brought lunch to work, ate at their desk, didn't go out for coffee, etc. and hence much less opportunity to co-mingle. Co-workers were cordial, but I never got the homey, belonging feeling in the 6 months I worked there. It was very much heads-down and very few personal interactions (vs work related). I would suggest working with as many attorneys/cases as possible to get to know as many co-workers as possible. That way other paralegals can know they can reach out to you when they need help. They will eventually open up to you.
I am learning the hard way, not to be too chummy with office mates anyway. Be nice, but there are jealous cuthroats in this business so best to keep to yourself.
Very, very true unfortunately. Not sure why that is.
