Typically about two years. It took me longer because I didn’t feel ready and was working on too many different things with too many different people, like the old saying- jack of all trades, master of none.
In my experience you are always learning regardless of level. But I think when you feel comfortable answering questions on basic stuff in workpaper/return prep is when you should become a senior.
When they actually promoted me- 10 years into my career/after college! I could’ve asked to be promoted earlier but didn’t feel ready for the said reasons above.
Not in the same firm but my last employer was a small firm without layered titles until 4 years into my employment. There was just partners and staff.
Just fake it til you make. Be willing to answer questions and if you don’t know the answer, admit it but state you can research into it or find someone with more insight. You’ll be fine.
It’s fair to be nervous. Congrats on the promo and go out and celebrate this weekend; well earned.
It varies greatly by industry, company and team size, and the individual. You say how long in a company, but the previous experience at your previous job is also a factor. I've had people on my team who I promoted to senior who had just 3 years experience since college. And people with 6 years at the company that were still not ready. It's an individual thing that depends on a lot of things, but mostly the individual's readiness.
