I saw 60 men women and children get blown to pieces in Iraq. When I came back to the United States it was hard to reconnect with regular peoples "problems". This is consulting not life or death. It literally doesn't matter.

I don't think OP's point is about taking it too seriously and moreso losing sight of who you are. You have to decide, be who you were or be who you're becoming.

I don't think that you can be "too aware." Do you mean that you've been spooked and am second guessing everything now?

I have still not succeeded. I am interested in this answer too.
I find that in general it helps to reacquaint yourself with yourself. Treat yourself as if you were dating yourself so you can learn what makes you tick. I find it easier to connect to certain parts of myself if I surround myself with those types of people. Volunteering is one way I give back while grounding myself back in reality and perspective. I think it depends on what kind of traumatic experience you are referring to though.
