I was made a CD 4 years in. 10 years later, I’m starting to get the hang of it.
damn, good for you!
None, just be a white man. Works really good if your bud already works there or if your father owns the agency. It’s politics at that level. And my first sentence is the requirement.

At my agency there are more female CDs/ACDs than male ones, so take heart.

Honestly, IMO, closer to 7-10 years to be a CD depending on how you can build relations with clients, sell thru work, work with the strategy, and if you can be a leader.
I know people with 15+ years of experience that are happy being senior/acd level because they like making work and don't like being a manager.
Then I know people with less experience who are CDs because they have that creative leader skill down.
Depending on the size of the shop, CDs don’t really manage. Or even if you do on one project, you won’t another.
I’m 2 years into being a CD, and I still do more work than manage because the ECDs are hands on.
Get that title, get that pay.
if you want to do it right and have a good book:
1-2 years as a junior (1-2 years total exp. for mid promotion)
4-5 years as a mid (5-7 years total exp. for senior promotion)
2-3 years as a senior (7-9 years total exp. for acd promotion)
2-3 years as an acd (9-11 years total exp. for cd promotion)
note that the lower end constitutes winning awards and new biz, whereas the higher number is more “steady as she goes.”
if you don’t care about your book or awards, then climb as fast as possible. lord knows there are plenty of unqualified men who do that! but beware… having a bad book and climbing that fast means you’ll burn out faster and have a shorter career.
Rules are gone these days, I’ve seen CDs with 5 years experience. Acds with 15, who took their time and they are much better off for it
