Am I the weird one for saying I don’t mind pharma? (I’m not in creative)
I spent 17 years in traditional advertising before making the jump to pharma. I find pharma much less toxic.
Take it from someone who is 50, it will not get better and if you are sick now it will only get worse. Get out while you are young.
Take it from someone who is 37 years old… find a way out and do it now while you can. It only gets harder to leave the longer you stay. Start looking now and build a chunk of money to cover 6+ months of living expenses. Then leave. Being unemployed will motivate you to find a new job.
Fair or not, applicants with jobs always look more attractive to employers than applicants without jobs.
I don’t know if consumer agencies are any less toxic
Money isn’t better. About even now.
My advice is to get out of advertising completely and find a career that will value you and your experience after you are 45 years old. Farmer used to extend your career a little bit longer, but not anymore.
*Pharma. Freudian typo? 😂
General agencies are FAAAR more toxic. I put in my 12 years then woke up. I happily left 2 years ago for more money and better work/life balance.
If it’s more creative stuff you’re looking for simply freelance for general agencies on the DL like I do or pursue other creative interests like writing short stories, screenplays (also me), etc
As someone who also had to make their way from non traditional agency to big agencies, it’s both simple and also super hard.
1)You need a book that will get you hired at the kind of agency you want to work with. If the work you’re doing and have done won’t do that, you need a different one.
Maybe wellness work/unbranded will. Maybe you need to make a few smaller moves first.
2) You need a story why your experience helps them. It’s unlikely your book will be as good the top juniors coming out of vcu. So what else can you add? Maybe it is health- that’s the only growing part of the industry.
But consumer is tough right now. Shrinking. Not as creatively driven. Even more political. And plenty of preciousness. And your titles/salary might not translate.
Think about it from the pov of the person hiring. Why do they want you? I’m sure there is a reason. You just need to share it.
It depends. What’s your background and what would you like to do? I want to go back to consumer advertising 😭
Sounds like you are on a shitty team or agency. Its not all awful.
But if you think you’re gonna have better mental health and consumer, good luck.
What department are you in? advertising, no matter what, is a client service industry and companies are too scared to tell the client know that we can’t do it that cheap or that quick - you work your ass off but on the consumer side of things if you aren’t always hungry, they’ll just get someone else who is.
You’ve been doing this for 5 years. That’s a blink. Just start meeting people in your new desired industry. Start networking.
this is huge!! it’s taken me 2 years since i realized i wanted to make a switch, starting to network and learn more, applying to positions, and going through interview processes to get an offer im excited about. Highly recommend Steve Dalton’s books for incredible networking and interviewing frameworks. Have patience with yourself and try things out.
They got you shackled to your desk? Put the energy you put into this therapeutic post and start digging out. Toxins flow into the vents of all jobs so you will be hard pressed to find a new profession devoid of blood suckers and ass kissers but learning how to handle them comes only with time, regardless of where you work. As has been said here network like a MF, if you put the time and more so, energy and effort it can be done.
When I hated my job in another life and yearned to get into advertising (the irony lol) it took me about 1.5-2 years to build a book and get a leg in the door. So give yourself a wide runway of like… today-2 years if your truly leaving any form of ad/marketing. Good luck!
Yeah - I can’t take this shit anymore. This is too much I can’t continue to work like this

Good for you realizing this while you’re still young enough to redirect.
