After looking it up and with 8 YOE and domain-specific expertise, you should be targeting $145K–$165K base, and potentially more if bonuses or equity are in play.
Suggested Salary Band:
• Base Salary: $145K–$165K
• Total Comp Target: $155K–$180K
• If negotiating internally, you should anchor to NYC benchmarks and highlight their specialized experience in regulated industries (medical research, AI/ML).
with the gvmt and all. plus the pay scale being low and my current salary being low. that jump would be herculean to get internally and would likely need a move. but externally, very feasible. thanks for the help
You should be making 500k
Based on what you and AF1 said, it definitely seems like you're being underpaid. I would encourage you to start looking around at other jobs and see if you can find something a bit higher. You could also work with your current company and let them know you would like a pay adjustment based on your experience, but my guess is that they probably know you're underpaid and are intentionally trying to keep you there.
I work with business analysts that do data engineering. To my knowledge, we don't have ML/AI Infrastructure expertise, period.
I live in a Tier 2 city. My next role requires 10YOE, and I have some time before I get there. I'm paid what you are.
I am not, but feel free to DM me and we can chat.
