I won't comment on the work but trust me, work in Asia if you have an opportunity. International work experience is not only personally amazing but also professionally.
DO IT! Being a foreigner in NY, I personally attest to the power of overseas experience. Any sensible manager will know that tastes differ across the planet, but the balls to work overseas and dive in to new things is admirable no matter your level.
I come from Asia, started in Asia. And now work here. Asia’s the wild-west of our industry. Little systems or SOPs. It’s a very roll-up-your-sleeves, get shit done environment. I’ve made campaigns in 6 months and sometimes in 6 weeks. You’ll enjoy the dynamism, able to grasp multi-cultural marketing in no-time and work at a creative pace that doesn’t rival anywhere else. There are not “best practices” because there just isn’t. You and your team makes the rules.
Builds a strong stomach for the industry and a very let’s get shit done attitude.
After being here for awhile now, I find processes and systems and the energy a bit languid to be honest.
Go! If the agency is good and the opportunity to get good shit done is real, then go. Who cares about how is perceived in the US or Europe. Asian stuff tends to be crazy fresh and amazingly crafty. You will learn a lot and push yourself further. If you come with killer campaigns I assure you nobody will be struggling to appreciate it or not getting the context. The work is all that matters. Plus, if all goes wrong and you get nothing done, you will have a great life experience and will grow personally. So start packing.
Agree with everyone, do it. Even if the work does not resonate Stateside, it will give you the perfect opportunity to show your understanding of local insight that led to that creative. For instance, have you ever wondered why you never see ads for condoms in the US? Well, in India you do, it is permitted. Explain that.
Asia is definitely not a real place.
...I’m worried that the work, even though a lot more work, I make during my time there won’t resonate with the folks in the states or even Europe (if i go that way) which will as a result leave me stranded there/ not be able to get a job in america or europe
I’m in Vietnam on vacation right now, and it is honestly one of the greatest places I’ve ever been. I would totally recommend taking a gig in Asia just based on the experience alone :)
It opens up your mind to working with different people, learning to adapt and expands your thinking....having worked in 2 different Asian markets, I find It really enriches your skill set
Appreciate the feedback. I probably should’ve mentioned that I’m from Asia myself originally. So not much of an experience for me lol the decision is purely regarding the work. I am a junior so i want to go somewhere that gives me an edge to work on cool stuff.
