I also work in advertising, and I don't know anyone who hates bad ads more than other advertisers.
Just makes good ads all the more satisfying!
My current job is to help brands grow. I'm sorry you're so sad about it.
I feel like the general BROAD term ‘advertising’ is annoying. But great ads make a cultural impact. People do pay attention.
The problem is with easy access platforms and a million channels to do so, we’re drenched in terrible advertising done by people who lack the talent to make impactful ads.
So we get ‘mostly annoying’. Which is a travesty.
The thing that blows my mind is…(in the UK at least)
We used to get free TV but the trade off was that you got ads. They were sometimes as entertaining as the shows, so it was palpable.
Then brands like Sky, Cable etc blurred those lines. You paid and got ads, But the trade off More exclusive programming and more control (e.g. on demand, or fast forward, rewind, pause, record)
Then streaming channels came in and we got no ads but the trade off was that you had to pay for them.
Now we’ve taken a backwards step. We’re paying and getting ads. We’re back in sky and cable Era. Unless you’re willing to pay EVEN more for no ads but no more control.
And ads are a lot more repetitive and less interesting (in most cases). This isn’t a negative post on ads, some of them are still great! It’s just the demand, the bar, and the entertainment level has dropped. It’s kinda slimey and worst yet they’re appearing in places we didn’t ask for.
