I was in a similar place a couple years ago. I stuck it out for almost a year but was heavily looking for 10 months. I went through many interviews until I found my current role. Sometimes you just have to grin and bear it for a few months until you can find the next opportunity. If you have any savings that could last you for a certain time, you could tap into that too. I didn't have any so I had to stick it out to pay the bills.
Unfortunately my family is relying on my income, so quitting is not an option. I am looking for fractional work as a strategy as well - in case I am on the chopping block because things are so volatile
Sounds like you need to leave regardless of if a layoff happens. I would just start applying. You're in a good position right now to be applying while holding onto your current role.
The market is tough, no doubt. Don’t take the mess at work as any reflection on you — companies fall apart pretty frequently. Apply with gusto, throw your net as wide as possible and think of all your potential options — potentially a different career, working for yourself or starting something with others. If you can, get your finances shored up now in case the layoff comes. And if it does, you will be among millions of talented people who got cut for no fault of their own; it sucks, but you can make it back.
