As you explore this further, I think you will find that world events do have an impact on your life and your work.....nearly everything is interconnected these days and there are impacts and ripple effects everywhere.....economy, supply chain, acces to resources/products, cost of what you purchase and consume, investments, health, safety and security, travel, etc and the list goes on.
I think you will also find in the business (and other) community that many of your peers and clients will discuss world events and you will be left out and unable to participate/contribute and this will impact how you are viewed and the value you drive.
I'm speaking from personal experience as I was not well read or well versed in world and current events earlier in my career.
Good luck.
I wouldn’t consider it negative but that is a very selfish viewpoint. I think it is important (for me) to be aware of what’s going on, even if it’s only an overview. Enough to have a high level conversation about it.
It’s easy to start with a daily newsletter like the Skimmm or summaries from your preferred outlet if you want to be more aware.
I'd subscribe to Morning Brew or the Skimm. There’s also the Up First podcast by NPR - a quick 15-minute podcast.
You should be aware of what is going on in the world. It may not impact YOU but it may impact people on your team, clients, coachees, mentors, etc. I agree with others that Skimm is a great morning resource to read and you can get the highlights and dive further from there.
Today for example - you may want yo read what is happening in Afghanistan at the moment - if anything it may allow you to feel lucky to be able to be ignorant about world news
Depends on who you’re talking to.
I think you need to know the headlines, so skim them and build up your knowledge of what's happening in the world over time, so at least you can engage in high level discussions and not come across as someone who is ignorant. You don't need to be an expert or a know it all.
The headlines, exactly what I have bee n reading but I don't have enough to discuss when someone brings up that topic.
No. Just don’t tell anyone.
Yes
Just be careful. If you say, for example, “We gave them every chance to determine their own future. What we could not provide them was the will to fight for that future."
Would likely be interpreted as calling them cowards and you will risk being cancelled.
These responses are quite gentle. Yes it is quite negative.
An inability to appreciate what is going on in the world leaves a lot of your views about life, society, and other people untested and unexamined. It impacts your empathy and ability to extrapolate / interpolate these complex human events into how you interact with your team, your friends and neighbors.
Part of the challenge we face as Americans and our view of the world is that we don’t know enough about the world to appreciate how America and Americans should interact with each other and with persons who are not similarly situated.
