I am new to working in government. Worked in private sector for 15 years. I got hired as a GS-13 in IT for a DOD agency. Is it common for 80-90% of employees to be completely useless? I feel so many civilian employees do way less than the minimum here and are not held accountable. Even a coworker that is still on probation hardly does anything. Are you essentially safe from being fired as soon as the Security clearance goes through. Already asked to perform briefing ahead of others.

Contractors do all the work in government

likesmart

Except that they’re not legally allowed to supervise, manage, direct, or approve anything that contractors do. It’s quite entertaining.

Not everyone, but the gov process eats away at motivated people and tends to conform the workers to the pace of the process. It's better in some agencies, hop around to different clients until you find the pace you like.

Very much this.

There’s a low average tied to bureaucratic process, and it kills the souls of the people really trying to make a difference

GS-13 for 15 YOE is kind of wild, for some reason I feel like you should have come in higher

like

Yeah I would have expected a GS-15

like

Pretty much. It generally takes an effort to fire someone on probation, though nowhere near as much effort as it takes once past probation.

like

The real issue is you having “15 years” of IT experience and not coming in as a GS-15. So you voluntarily came in a lower grade and expected to be surrounded by superstars? The people you work very well may be talented but they don’t bother making the extra effort because they are a gove solely for the benefits and work life balance.

I was in the military then worked as a civilian in the federal government then switched to local government position because I felt very unmotivated in the civilian federal government job and without purpose. I wish I would have stayed federal and found my purpose in things outside of my work. The pay was so much better and my work life balance was unmatched. Now I kill myself at my job on the local level. We have no funding, no staff, no support, no appreciation and terrible pay. Had I stayed federal I could have "jumped around" position much easier within the federal government until I landed on one I may have enjoyed more. Now I feel stuck. The difference between federal and local government is astonishing.

Googling ADHD today (I’m having a distracted day) and super frustrated because I’m realizing that I was likely misdiagnosed as depressed for years. I was taking SSRIs and dealing with awful side effects while I struggled for so long. I finally got an official diagnosis about 10 years ago but was never taught the symptoms or how to manage them. Found you tube channel ADDitutde magazine. Several really good presentations with recent developments Thought I’d share.

Is there a website that shares announcements of recent contract wins by federal contractors across all federal agencies?

Sometimes the leadership does not even inform you on the status of a submitted proposal unless we win the work. I get why they are doing it but it would be great if there was an external source/website that would share this info instead of us waiting around to hear from them.

Do Leidos, SAIC, and other mostly-fed consulting businesses pay bonuses to all levels? If so, what does a typical bonus target look like? Booz Allen does not pay bonuses until you get to the Senior Associate level (1 step below Director) and I think that impacts employee performance and work ethic pretty dramatically. I’m wondering if not paying bonuses is common to federal contracting because of how the contracts or priced, or if this is something unique to Booz Allen.
