Ugh. I started at 31 and now at 41, I’m only now beginning to understand how ageist this industry is. I don’t know how you’re pitching yourself, but my hot take is you should use your life and former experience to sell in how you are uniquely positioned to solve the problem better/differently than the dime a dozen young ppl. SO MUCH of this industry is people skills. So much. I fully believe the reason I thrive as an older creative is my EQ and respect for others.
Age ism does exist. Butttttttt, don’t act old. Keep learning. And never stop owning stuff - from projects to clients.
Yeah I can never understand how age and experience is a turn off. I mean from what I know - every good idea is based on a good insight - and every insight is based on a human truth. So, if I’ve lived on this planet longer wouldn’t I have experienced more human truths?
If your job is a junior copywriter, didn’t someone give you a shot? Or do you mean they won’t give you an opportunity for advancement? I’m curious because I am interested in the industry. I am working on my portfolio at an ad school now because I love writing and find advertising interesting. I will also be starting late, and am sad to recently find out that this industry is ageist. Let me also ask, why is that? Are your bosses all younger and are firing their elders? Who among you in the industry can flip the script and begin to keep older employees, or better yet - hire them? That is depressing and wrong...
I’ve not experienced ageism, but know it exists. I think you do need to not act old. To me that means simply being interesting and interested in stuff. New stuff, old stuff, people, business, politics, everything. One can’t have an I’ve seen it all attitude (even if you have!).
Good advice. Thanks.
