I am planning on using a competing offer I don't even want just to force my current company into matching a $20k salary increase. I love my current team, my commute is short, and I know the processes inside out, but I am objectively underpaid by at least 20% compared to local market rates. I passed the final round for a toxic company I would never actually join, but the written offer letter is clean and lists $115k base. Am I going to destroy the professional relationship?

How well liked are you? How replaceable are you? It could go either way.

You could try telling your employer you think you deserve a 20% increase because of reasons A, B and C, tell them what you think your open market value is and only mention this other offer that you don’t want if the market value is questioned.

Tread carefully, any time you tell an employer that you’ve been interviewing somewhere else, you put in their mind that you’re a flight risk. You have to really understand the relationship you have with your employer and your career future there to accept a counter offer.

I’d be careful in this market. At most places attrition is lower then planned so regardless of how well your individual team likes you leadership is less willing to approve matching offers to retain people. Usually for this strategy to work you have to be willing to leave and I would be prepared for them to say no.

And if you are really under paid by that much and they do match you will likely be higher in the pay band then your peers and your raises will likely be horrible for the foreseeable future.

My company is actually pretty damn great to work for. So many love it, but our pay is low compared to the rest of the financial sector, and so when people with great experience come knocking, HR denies them because the ask is outside the price range. So mangy managers are pushing back but damn. Why shoot yourself in the foot like that?

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
