I am realizing that just putting your head down and working hard does not always get noticed. I show up, take on extra responsibility, and try to do things the right way, but it feels invisible sometimes. I do not want to come off as self promoting or annoying, but I also do not want my efforts to keep getting overlooked. How do you put yourself out there so leadership actually sees the work without it feeling forced or awkward?

I once had a boss who used to say that if you did something great, and no one noticed, there was no point in doing it. I don't entirely agree with that, but he did have a point. It's important to make sure that your hard work is noticed, otherwise it won't be appreciated. Even if it's just during evaluations, it's important to speak up and put what you've done on the record.

I get what they were saying, even if it’s a little harsh. Doing the work still matters, but you’re right that effort alone doesn’t always travel upward on its own.

Build relationships with other people to get your name out there. When people enjoy working with you, they will let others know.

Networking is where it's at... Go above your manager. Who's the manager of X department or your bosses boss or y department get your fingers in all them pies;

Be a self-promoter—everyone else is doing it. The only way you get anywhere is by advocating for yourself. I have no problem speaking up and promoting myself; that’s the only way you get noticed.

That realization stings because it is so common. Hard work alone does not always get visibility, especially in busy workplaces. Wanting your effort to be seen is not ego, it is fair. Sometimes it is less about bragging and more about gently connecting your work to results out loud. Have you found any moments where your work did get noticed, even briefly?

I am in the same boat. I honestly say that the best way for them to see your accomplishments is not to see them. In other words, go on vacation, take a few days off. They will see how essentially you are to the team in your absence. No one is indispensable, but finding people with a genuine love for our industry and an unbreakable work ethic is very rare. Employers need to treasure that.
