I am very ambitious and self-directed; I have been bullied in a lot of work environments as well. Although I am in general a kind person, I can also be direct in an effort to be efficient. I am wondering if others tend to take this as aggression, especially other females and remote colleagues. Has anyone here had to deal with this, and how do you keep it from limiting your success?

I can relate to a lot of this— I have been bullied a couple of times by people who were threatened by me (one of those bullies is actually a friend now, and we’ve talked about it a lot). I am also very direct.

The key is balance. I am a very “zero bullshit” person and can be a bit tough…but in the right place and the right time. I’m always very direct (I’m from Boston!) but I am also kind, and I work to build relationships with my colleagues, be generous with my time to mentor and sponsor more junior colleagues, etc. If people get to know you as a person it gives them the complete picture, rather than just that snapshot of someone being blunt.

Thank you! Agree with all this 💗

Can you say more about how you’re being bullied? I would guess people are either intimidated or threatened by you. Women especially take offense to this type of attitude

Thanks so much analyst. My faith is my whole life, so I couldn’t say I got out of the PIP without God. But I also prayed for advice, and a Vice President on Fishbowl gave me a blueprint for winning. I screenshot it and read it over and over to myself. He/she completely changed my mindset going into it; otherwise, I may have quit. VP, if you’re out there, I am so grateful you took the time to stop by my post.

I do have a colleague who has been here for 15 years. Perhaps I could start running some decisions by her rather than making knee jerk reactions, especially in emails. Thanks for reminding me to document; it has gotten exhausting.

I reported gender discrimination early on (for example, women in lower paying positions regardless of more experience in the industry, hiring a man to do what I used to do and paying him more) This is something I have been harassed about ever since: Excluding me from training, meetings, and not allowing me to get a certification that would help me progress.

The "confrontation" is really difficult for me lol. I actually like my current boss and she's been helpful and made me feel like she looks out for me too. My old employer asked me if I wanted to come back to the company as a manager. The pay will likely be much better and the position holds more responsibility than I’ve had before, so overall it would be a step up. The issue is I left the company because of an abusive manager who constantly put me down and made me feel like I wasn’t doing anything right. If I come back I’d be working under her again. I’m torn because the opportunity is great but the stress was awful. Continued in comments…

Boomer. I am in between jobs. Laid off in 10/21 after 16+ yrs, with an ABA firm. RIF. Still on excellent terms. Took my time living off generous package and didn’t seriously start applying until 01/22. Made a rookie mistake and accepted first offer.
Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
Now interviewing a LOT. Some temp work, I still have “it”. I relate to all gens. Willing to mentor AND learn from all. Tech savvy, CTE from day one. Leads?

At my uncles wedding in Madrid I remember lying down on the grass in the courtyard after their first dance and crying, my Dad came and saw me, laid down in his suit beside me and asked what was wrong.

“I know my boyfriend wouldn’t dance with me like that at our wedding”

And we just lay there as I cried, and then got up. Had a drink.

Said boyfriend left years ago, and now I have a wonderful man who just asked me what type of dance lessons I want for our wedding next year.

Don’t give up.
