Witnessed ageism in a unusual way. I am a P, Male, 51
Client counterpart and I were discussing a Consultant and the client told me he didn’t want this guy because the consultant is in his 50s. I quietly told the client that cannot be a reason plus I am in my 50s and you should have seen the client back paddle with compliments for me. Just a weird situation. Ageism is real.

Oh man! That’s awful! I’m also 51 and female so this hits home. Are you going to do anything about it like report to your leadership just for awareness?

I was listening to our 1H earnings call and they spent 15 min. of the hour talking about the younger employees and how valuable they are. Forget the experienced employees that keep you afloat...most of the younger crew make more than I do...a lot more.

Indeed. I was wooed hard by a headhunter for a non-profit board. Have very little time to spare but finally said yes. A month later they come back and actually say we went with a couple of younger people and will keep me in mind. I mean I was 54 when they talked to me so not sure why they would waste my time and then actually tell me the reason!

Also for board roles 50 is young.

Totally agree and no one highlights it with people in their 50s

It’s discriminatory based on age

Yes, I face this a good deal these days.

Spent so much of my career wanting more experience and “gray hair” only to find that not very helpful in this day and age. 🤦‍♂️

I just left a very toxic work place.
The crazy thing is they were just named the best local municipality to work for. It's upsetting. They advertise a "culture" but don'tapply it. It felt like a used car sales pitch, I was sold a dream but given junk. I am constantly replaying moments. I have read so many books and everything leads to they were the problem. How do I recover from this?

My colleague at work who’s in the junior parallel role / receptionist just drives me crazy. As a Marketing specialist, I oversee our social pages + following on requests from there. Yesterday she said - “Maybe you could also reply to all requests on our general customer email?” I said I don’t know how to prioritise with my main responsibilities - boss and big boss present and stayed silent. Poor time management / ignorance / passive aggression? Feel pity for her! 😡

How would you recommend tackling a middle manager bad mouthing to team members and seniors despite having left the job? I worked as a consultant at a globally reputed firm but with a terrible, mind draining team culture — now the middle manager is bad mouthing and of course not communicating her inability to manage her own time, leading to work calls at 10 pm in night and abusive language at work.

Hi, are there any Construction Project Managers/Owner’s Representatives out there? I’ve been one for 1.5 years, after being a Structural Engineer for 10 yrs. I’m so grateful I made the pivot bc I had gotten completely miserable on the engineering side and now I love my job. I also made a significant salary jump to just over $100k when I made the switch. But bc I felt underpaid most of my engineering career, I want to make sure I don’t continue to be. Am I doing good? For reference I’m 34/female.

How do you get a client to move away from wanting meetings only after 5pm? I’ve had a few meetings with them after work hours and I think they now expect that I’m always free after 5 to talk when they want. I think I’m within my rights to not have meetings after work hours (of course with exceptions when urgent), but these are often just discussions that could happen via email.

I have the opportunity to act as outside counsel for a new construction company (commercial project management). I’ve been practicing for 4 years and have experience in small business law, none in construction. I am hesitant to take this on, and cannot tell if it is just new lawyer jitters or common sense. PC knows I have not worked in construction law, but has worked with me previously and trusts me for the job.

Would love advice!

My observation is that it is hard for consulting partners to land the quality public or private board roles everyone naturally targets. Despite there being a significant amount of exceptional talent that could be deployed, there is a big bias against consultants.
