Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

If they call you at a bad time, when you are unprepared, tell them that and have the conversation later. You are now trying to negotiate yourself at the upper end of their salary range when you put yourself well below the lower end. It's going to be a bit of an uphill battle.
I don’t think there is much to say about it until you get an offer. At that point, you can tell them based on the complete package (benefits and whatnot), your experience, and the responsibilities of the role, you want to be closer to $65k
Agreed
As you go through the process, when it comes time to talk money just tell them what you think is right. If they bring up your earlier answer just be forthright and say you were caught unawares and said something mistakenly. It's not like you put it in writing, after all.
For the future, when that happens, calm down and realize you don't have to answer immediately. Just let it go to voicemail and call them later. That's totally okay to do. They totally understand that not everyone is going to answer the phone immediately (unless it was a scheduled call of course).
I would clarify it in an email
