The reason I am asking is the firm appears to put more weight on billable hours, even for equity partners in determining total pay. It looks like I may be able to make about $500-550k with the book I described once I’m an EP.
I understand (based on very little hard info) other firms may allow for more salary based on origination.
Flip side is that I have a great deal of goodwill at this firm by adding a practice area they don’t have and which feeds a few other practices. I also have been given full autonomy about wfh, attending/sponsoring conferences etc.
Is it possible to go somewhere with a book like this and make substantially more than $500k while not having to bill as much and focus more on BD?
Also open to the idea that I’m an idiot for asking this question :)
Culture means a lot to me. I like being able to work on my own and am staying primarily because of that aspect. If you think your book would go with you, consider a move. Always hard to say what business will do and if you flat out ask - that could make things difficult later. Hard question
Isn’t the typical large law firm model roughly 1/3 to working attorney, 1/3 to firm overhead, and 1/3 to equity partners (ie originating attorney)? Meaning if equity partner both lands and does the work, they should get about 2/3 of the billing. If you plug your numbers into that model, what would your take home be?
