I currently work as a litigation associate and have about 2.5 years of experience post grad. What is the best way to try and move to a corporate governance/capital markets role?

First step would be to figure out whether you mean public company governance/securities reporting or capital markets deal work, because those are related but different. Either way, I’d start by reaching out to law school classmates and other warm contacts in those groups at firms you’d realistically target and ask who is busy enough to take a retooling candidate.

You’ll almost certainly need to take a class-year haircut, probably coming in as a first year depending on the firm and your actual experience. I’d also look for any way to make your litigation background relevant: securities litigation, internal investigations, board disputes, disclosure issues, shareholder matters, etc. That makes the pivot easier to sell than “I just want to switch to corporate.”

Thank you so much for your response! My experience has been mostly securities litigation (plaintiff side though), so I’ll talk up my familiarity with the subject matter.

I am prior military and went to law school. I had a family to take care of while I was a student, hence I went as fast as possible to get to a paycheck, graduating in 2 years, and bypassing the standard summer clerkships. How could I get some experience strictly remote? I am w-2 working as an accountant in healthcare, have passed the bar and am working on my CPA license (studying starts at 3 am, then work FT). I would like to eventually hang a shingle as a tax lawyer, but need experience. TIA!

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues? (Small firm, only associate under this partner and have been working at the firm for 2 years). There are an increasing number of passive aggressive comments from the partner who expects to be completely hands off once the case lands on my desk. Wants me to figure it all out despite cases being from different areas of law.

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

likesmart

What is a reasonable pay increase? This will be my first pay increase. I make 70k now and will be starting my second year at big law. I had 3 years of prior experience before joining the firm.
