I don't want to share my location to not give anything away, but I just want to say there are some real crooks in this world and it makes me sad. Our district just cleaned house with the entire Sped leadership. Like, all the directors. All at once. In their place were hired completely new people who have no idea what they're doing, with questionable credentials, but they "know the superintendent" and some of the other board members. Our students and us teachers deserve better!

That’s really disheartening to hear! It’s so frustrating when decisions like that affect the students and staff who rely on strong leadership. I get the sadness and anger about seeing new hires with questionable backgrounds—it feels like our kids deserve leaders who genuinely understand their needs. I hope the community can come together to advocate for better support and changes moving forward!

Thank you! I hope so too. With our district splitting in two years, severely impacting Sped this whole thing is almost too much to take in. I feel like a lot of us are being taken advantage of right now

I'm so sorry. It's frustrating when people have power and we feel (or know) they won't use it well. Here's hoping they don't mess too much up that gets down to you and the kids, and that people remember next time school board elections come up.

Thank you. People don't use their vote enough in my area and I'm really hoping to see that change in the next few years.

We had a change in our special ed leadership in beginning of 23/24. In June of 2023 our sped director left, and our coordinator for social work and psych (but really helped anyone in sped) retired at the young age of 71 (honestly he was the absolute best person to report to; excellent mentor, master at sped law, supportive toward sped staff and understanding of the specific stresses of sped, not judgmental at all and wanted everyone to shine, ally to staff and parents), he was a true gem.

The changes rocked our (sped) world last year. The new coordinator, also a a psychologist is a complete 180 from our previous one. She was young (which is fine) but would say, I’m here to support you, but in contentious mtgs she’d leave us high and dry without support. We never really saw the new sped director which was highly unusual for us. Two of us in soc work retired early (me being one) and a combo of 10 ppl left between social work and psych. We lost 1/3 of our staff in the social work dept. This is what happens when mgt isn’t good. We lost a lot of very good ppl!

I wish you so much luck! Maybe it won’t be so bad. Try to keep an open mind, you got this! 💪🏼

Tell me your craziest experience working with a TV network. Here comes mine:

I'm American, but my family is mostly Colombian. I was told my aunt and cousins would come here for 2 weeks. I discovered they were going to be paid to appear in a famous Hispanic TV show, where a "judge" receives a case, hears the plaintiffs and defendants and renders a verdict. But of course, it's all fake and payed 😂 turns out she wanted me to go there (even though I don't work for that TV network) so she's sure she'll be paid at the end of the show. Wth did I just do.

I love my job in special education, the job may bring quite a bit of stress and exhaustion but nothing compares to the stress of the related service team. OT, PT, speech, BCBA, social worker, etc etc is really what’s killing me this year. It is 23 days into the school year and the team members all make different plans and as a result, nothing is being accomplished. And if paraprofessionals follow ie what OT says but not PT, it cause so much unnecessary conflict!

I feel like I'm at my wits end. I teach self-contained classes and according to the ISBE website my classes shouldn't be more than 8 students unless I have an aide - then it can be 10. I have no aide and most of my classes are around 14 kids. Some with behavior plans that are only out of our behavior room setting for my class... Is anybody else out there going through illegal class sizes for self-contained? How are you dealing? Maybe a vent session is in order.

HELP! 30+ years of teaching Sped and I’m at a loss. 6th grade student in Middle School with Doose syndrome. Prior to MS, the elementary said he never caused problems. Since the 1st day, he is disruptive in class, refuses to work, and is disrespectful. He has a one-on-one para but she is in tears most days because of his behavior. Parents agreed with a behavior plan - he thinks it’s a game. Parents say he is not allowed to be this way at home.
