I earn $93,000 a year, but a recruiter reached out to me, saying they wanted to hire me. It felt nice to be wanted, but they're only offering me $94,500 a year. Do I have the right to be offended? If they want me so badly, shouldn't they be offering me a decent pay bump?

My mentors told me I shouldn’t job hop for less than a 30% bump if jumping to another consulting firm, since you have to rebuild network.

If you’re tryna leave to industry, there’s not a good one-size-fits-all rule. You might be burnt out and okay with leaving for a comfortable salary albeit less than consulting. You might have made enough and you want to try your hand at something riskier.

For your situation, I wouldn’t leave for $94,500 unless this is pivoting to a new field you’re interested in, new career opps, or you have burn out from current company.

I switched firms for the same salary. I did it because the role was too good to pass up and it was an industry pivot.

OP - I wouldn’t be offended because that offer might reflect the times we’re living in. Just respectfully decline.

First - you should consider the total package of compensation. Obviously if a benefit doesn’t matter to you, don’t include it. But things like retirement matches, insurance, PTO, work from home, and more are all meaningful.

Second - it’s totally fine to interview and turn down offers, don’t take it personally. It’s also OK to ask for more and counter but again, don’t act like you’re insulted as you do so.

Why would you tell them your actually pay and not slightly above? First mistake.

Who cares if you’re offended? Definitely not them. What you do have is the right to say yes, no, or negotiate. They are honestly expecting this. Leave emotion out of it. If you feel your value is higher than their offer, it’s your job to sell them on that. Full stop.

You're probably at market for your position. Is it a lateral move or a bump from consultant to Sr consultant for example. You leave out important details which may explain the ,$1,500 bump

like

The hiring company isn’t trying to use your current salary to make you an offer (did you actually tell them your salary?). They are telling you this is what the market says this role pays. You can negotiate, but not really based on your current role, but your skills and why you’re worth more than that.

I wouldn’t

Unless your current culture is bad
