I feel like the people who actually get the work done are the last ones to get promoted. It feels like those group projects in high school where one person would do all the work and the rest of the group would screw around, not contribute, and get an easy grade. Thoughts on this? How do you ensure that your the one to capitalize on YOUR hard work?

I’m so burned out and not sure what to do. 29 in Texas. I am currently a Deli Manager. My experience is in banking, real estate, shipping and receiving, caregiving and the obvious retail. Unfortunately I struggle getting a job due to a deferred adjudication on my record for theft. It was dismissed but it still pops up I have 4 more years before I can seal the record. My company is fully remote in the US and is in general supportive of me going but concerned about local and international tax liability. Remote year doesn’t share tax advice and our HR team is small. What holiday party did you get?
Anyone living close to an office, got a holiday party with food and drinks, and the venue started open for them until around midnight. Our remote workers got a one hour party w a DJ and trivia that let you win gift cards. Yeah it was nice to win a gift card but I found it lame in comparison to hanging out with my team in real life.

Started my new job today! I’m joining a late stage startup coming from a more mature company, and am noticing a lotttt of documentation debt. I’m coming in as Staff/Lead, and want to eventually move into management in 1-4 years. If I spend some of my first two week block updating and creating documentation for future devs, will that be seen as working hard or wasting time? It feels like a good use of my time to me….
