Honestly, you just have to walk away from the laundry, dishes, mess or whatever else and just go do what you WANT to do every so often. I struggle with this and I’ve always struggled to get into shape and maintain it, and I realized semi-recently when a fitness trainer told me that fit people always put going to the gym first. The same applies here. The to-do list will always be there.
My friend told me that he declares “chore bankruptcy” bc he just falls too far behind and needs to wipe the slate clean with his wife so that she can’t keep getting mad at him over stuff that’s been on his to do list for a while. I feel like this is totally a man thing BUT I think the concept is kinda useful? Like just forget that you’re behind and start fresh.
Every week I pick up my son from school and do something fun with him for 1:1 time, and just plan to make up work later in the evening. Every month I book a massage and take that a morning off. A couple times a month I take the evening to go out with friends. Prioritize the stuff that matters!
Schedule the fun. Make sure it happens. The chores are never ending and will still be there. It's okay if the bathroom goes another few days before getting cleaned. Or if the laundry doesn't ever really get 'caught up' as long as there are some clean clothes to wear. I feel the same way about vacations....don't get into debt for them, but make them happen. Kids grow up so fast and one of the things I'm most grateful for are the trips we've taken as a family. They don't have to be expensive. Just make the time together happen.
