I found out the male associate hired after me makes $15k more for the same role. I have more experience, better billing numbers, and I’ve been here a year longer, yet his starting package was significantly higher than mine. When I brought it up to HR, they told me it was based on his negotiation skills and market demand at the time. Should I fight for a match?

Absolutely.

Yes. Continue to focus on your performance. Even if it made sense in the market for them to hire you for less initially, you’ve now proven your worth. And if they aren’t willing to at least match you, start looking for another position

It blows my mind how people come on here posting about knowing what their coworkers make and, even more so, then going to HR with it. HR is cool with this? It seems like it could possibly start a never ending merry go round of people knocking on the door begging for raises.

After 5 years as an AE / Sales Manager, what are the next possible career paths?

I love sales and wish I could stay as an individual contributor, but I feel like I am not getting anywhere with the salary i want, and the job itself I feel isn't using all of my potential/skillets (plus I'd like to learn and put into practice more).

So I'm really keen to hear from others what steps they took in their career to get into roles they love doing now but still within the sales side of an organisation.

For associates who have lateraled in the last 6 months or so, what made you decide to move? Has your situation improved since moving? I’m a transactional mid-level & I’ve interviewed with some great firms recently. I’m struggling to get excited though…it just seems like no matter where I go I’ll be overworked & under appreciated. Hoping there are some positive stories out there to give me hope. Haha

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues? (Small firm, only associate under this partner and have been working at the firm for 2 years). There are an increasing number of passive aggressive comments from the partner who expects to be completely hands off once the case lands on my desk. Wants me to figure it all out despite cases being from different areas of law.
