Sometimes you just can't win. Reminds me of a political debate years ago when one candidate was skewered for being "too prepared" and the one who ranted like a lunatic on a subway platform was praised for authenticity. I would always opt for the prepared person, but not everyone sees it that way.
I interview people all the time who are too polished. You need to sound like a real person. Clients expect to talk to real people and you won’t always have time to rehearse.
Hi there,
Rehearsing and practicing is great. Can you elaborate here some more? Were you using some words that standout, like "futhermore," "for instance," "additionally." I've had attorneys use those words even when they speak to a lowly 3rd party recruiter like me, and I ask them to speak like a human and less like a robot.
All you gotta do is put in and rehearse the delivery as well. Look at stand up comedians. Every word is rehearsed dozens of times, but they inject laughs, pauses, mannerisms, etc to make it seem like it’s a relaxed conversation.
I have probably done more than 50 interviews. Some people are prepared and some just come in and sell you on them. I don't think I've ever selected a candidate solely because they read my bio or impressed me with their knowledge of the firm.
That is such odd feedback to me. I don't know how being "too polished" could be seen as a bad thing. Maybe you just need to loosen up a little bit.
I think it's about finding a balance between sounding stiff and sounding prepared. Try not to think about things too much beforehand and attempt some off-the-cuff answers. This might help you avoid sounding robotic.
