I got married last weekend. I reserved a room block at the Hilton and apparently we didn’t meet our minimum attrition and they charged us $1900 as liquidated damages for the unused rooms. It’s technically in our contract, but has this happened to anyone else? Were you able to get out of it? There were still rooms available those nights, so they didn’t actually lose any other bookings due to our room block.

Didn't happen to me but my first thought is to call someone there and just really kindly and sincerely ask if there's anything at all they can do to lower this substantially

like

Yes, that’s our plan today. Thanks for affirming that it’s the way to go!

like

Ugh is that how room blocks work….we are responsible for unbooked rooms?

Yeah they released the rooms but are still charging us which is BS.

wondered about the outcome?

They won’t return our calls. The desk person told us that’s probably what the charge is but told us we needed to talk to sales and they won’t call us back after we left multiple messages. Also, they haven’t sent us any invoice and charged the card without our consent (there was nothing in the contract about pre-authorizing a charge). So we challenged it through our credit card company. We will see how it turns out. I’ll come back and update!

Hotels that offer a “courtesy” block will usually be proud/ tell you about that. Where they block the rooms but you aren’t on the hook for unused.
