I had a one-on-one where I brought up growth opportunities, and my manager straight-up said I’m “too valuable” where I am to move up. On one hand, I guess it’s nice to be appreciated. On the other, it feels like they’re admitting they’d rather keep me stuck than reward me for doing a good job. In an industry where titles and credits matter, this feels like career sabotage. How would you respond without burning bridges but still making it clear you’re not okay staying in place forever?

“We like underpaying you.” Don’t waste another season waiting for them to change.

One of the most backhanded compliments that exist, apply to new places with better offers, I get enjoying where you work but that’s a clear sign you’ll never move up.

Yikes, they should be compensating you at least. Definately try to give hints about moving on and look around I'd say.
