I had a one-on-one where I brought up growth opportunities, and my manager straight-up said I’m “too valuable” where I am to move up. On one hand, I guess it’s nice to be appreciated. On the other, it feels like they’re admitting they’d rather keep me stuck than reward me for doing a good job. In an industry where titles and credits matter, this feels like career sabotage. How would you respond without burning bridges but still making it clear you’re not okay staying in place forever?

I later learned that he was making double my salary. I know it's not an employee's job to fix pay inequity by sharing their salary figures, but I'm still of the opinion that it helps uncover pay gaps.
