This is tough, it for sure sounds like you are being ghosted and they went in another direction but I could be wrong. Did you ask how long the process typically takes?
That’s tough man, sorry this happened to you.
Don’t forget a lot of banks are laying off deal people as well. They may have decided that they couldn’t finically support the role
He actually said the pipeline is really busy and he’d need me to start asap. I don’t know what to think as whatever the reason could be - I just don’t understand why they haven’t updated me

Brace yourself for the worst. I think you may have been ghosted and they’re keeping you in the wings unless it falls through with the other candidate.

Damn sorry to hear that. Very unprofessional of them but unfortunately not unheard of either.
They probably extended the offer to the other person and is waiting until everything clears before telling you.
You won’t like this but there’s a 90% chance the role is either not approved bc of the market or they may have even gotten rid of the MD. I’d reach out to HR contact and don’t be surprised if they don’t respond. If they’d be interested they’d pursue you and they’re not. I’d stay away from these types of roles as the market is just not ready now. I’d move on now and check out other non-M&A roles where your skills are transferable. Always have 3-4 jobs in the pipeline and keep saying yes until you have a tangible offer. Recruiters and companies will def screw you and I’ve seen everything, even offers retracted. Best of luck!
Don't be discouraged. Be an enthusiastic runner-up for the role should the opportunity present itself. That's happened to me. And I'm still with the same company.
