A few thoughts;
1. Important to zoom out a little bit, one year in your career is immaterial. Showing promotion at your firm will impress more than an individual leaving for another firm for promotion. As somebody who interviews experienced hires frequently, this is a thing I pay attention to as it’s usually pretty clear when this happened. From my experience, there is a higher probability that the individual who jumped to a different role for promotion won’t perform as high than somebody who has been internally promoted because often, there is a reason why they weren’t internally promoted.
2. I have been in your shoes in terms of being burnt out and being displeased with management. I’m not defending them, I don’t know your individual facts but what jumps out here is that it looks like you are putting the blame entirely on them for the reduction of the quality of the work but I don’t see you taking any responsibility for it. Even if they did give you too much, was there anything that you could have done to prevent this? I got burnt out but when I reflect on it, I made mistakes in not asking for help sooner. Again, not saying this is necessarily the case but it is what jumps out to me…which brings me to #3
3. You need to really assess if you are truly ready for manager. Maybe you are but if you aren’t, you would be joining a new firm with no brand, no tenure, higher expectations and potentially in a role that you aren’t ready for. I have almost never seen a senior held back from manager without cause. I’ve heard many of them say it’s unfair but in every instance in my career, they weren’t even close to the next level. Any time it’s close, we have opted for promotion.
4. But you also have to assess if you truly don’t trust Baker Tilly and your team. Some teams are toxic and if this is truly irreconcilable, then maybe green grass is the right choice. But ensure that if you leave, you aren’t running away from Baker Tilly but rather running towards something. Is RSM that good or do you just want the title?
Go get the promotion. I was in a similar spot a year ago. Second year senior, they give me “performed above expectations “ rating and didn’t give me a promotion because “can work on more attention to detail in self review” lol.. anyways jumped ship and got the manager title making 40% more than last year. Just got my evaluation “performing as expected” and a 10% raise with 20% bonus. At the end of the day you have to ignore what other people think and take care of yourself. Quit gaslighting yourself, go for the manager title you’ll figure it out.
Great advice above. I would also recommend always erring on the side of letting your partners know when you have too much to deliver the expected quality, rather than trying to do your best but delivering a lower quality product due to time constraints. The partners need to be able to manage risk, and that cannot happen if they don’t know what you have not had time to do. Saying “I did X but was not able to finish Y” is very helpful for them to gauge if something needs more eyes on it. If they then send it out without looking at it more carefully, that’s on them, but if you said it was good and they expected a certain level of review that did not occur, that’s on you.
Here at RSM, there is a supervisor position between senior and manager. It’s the same as that one year you’ve been asked to wait for at BT so I’m actually surprised that we would be offering you manager instead of supervisor, because in my experience, we suck at hiring managers - there are a ton of expectations on managers. It would be tough for you to acclimate to both RSM and a new manager role. But hey….promo = money, and we keep saying we’re not planning to go PE, so I’d give it a shot. You could ask about the supervisor role and see if that would be a better fit for the first year. You’re coming in right at year end so it would be a quick year! Or, you can just go for it! Good luck!
From my pov, it’s more a question of relationships and comp. There is no guarantee it won’t happen again or that it wouldn’t happen at RSM for that matter. If you feel your network is more valuable at BT stay but if you have an opportunity for more comp and the title now at RSM, take it
