I have a final round tomorrow and I know the offer is coming. My ask is going to be $20k above what they've signaled is the range. I've done my research and I think I can justify it but I'm terrified. Anyone want to talk me into not chickening out?

You’re guaranteed to never get what you don’t ask for.

Be polite and be honest - “I was hoping for X, which seems in line with my experience and the market, but I’m open to considering any reasonable offer”

And be ready to pivot to non-salary options if they can’t or won’t budge on that number - like extra PTO, work from home or something else that benefits you.

Go forth and kick ass!

This is generally a good strategy if you can justify it. “I was hoping to make x but I would consider any offer,” and aim high with x. That way even if they don’t get to x, you’re at least likely to get to the top of their range if they want you. Good luck

I would say that if they have stated a range throughout the process and at the end you are coming in at $20k over the top of their range you probably wasted everyone’s time. Even with justification.

I would say that you shouldn’t engage in an interview process without having an understanding of the range beforehand. I’ve also found many times companies have a stated range but will only pay the top amount to top tier candidates.

Unless you have a niche skill/difficult position to recruit for, I think this is a bad strategy.

All you can do is ask and the worst they can say is no. But, be mindful of shooting too high / coming off as greedy, as this could make the hiring manager no longer entertain the current offer

If the range didn't fit what you were looking for, why did you proceed with interviews? 20% above their top range definitely feels like a long shot, but as long as you are OK with them potentially rescinding the offer, there is no harm in it. If you led them to believe the range provided fit what you were looking for, it's a real possibility. Be able to explain what you learned during the interview that leads you to feel it deserves more money. Good luck!

If you come in too high, they might think you’ll always be upset about your income and not hire you knowing you’ll always look for something else.

Good strategy if you can go for it.

Don't mention until asked either in the final round, or when the offer comes through.

Tech company lay offs….are they soon to be inevitable?!

There is lots of companies really taking a hit in the tech space. Is this something that people are nervous about? Many seem to still be having a hiring push but with the button falling (IMO this is still just start we have a long way to go to bottom out) will that halt and layoffs ensue? And if so, which depts do you think will get hit the hardest?

Anyone have insight to what the plan is at UpStart for example?

Hi Fishes, I recently got an offer from NielsenIQ. I want to understand a few salary components. Are LTA, Car fuel & Maintenance, Meal vouchers, and Internet expenses just for tax benefits, or are they given with salary?

It would be great help if someone can help me understand these components.

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’m currently in the process of being converted from contractor to permanent. In my initial conversations I was under the impression that I was in a different pay grade and asked for a salary 25k higher than the max allotted for my position. I feel like it gave the impression that I don’t know what I’m doing. Any suggestion how I can recover from this?

Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.

Thoughts? Should I go higher? I do my job well that’s why they decided to keep me as a contractor after my internship.

I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Hi All! Looking for some advice. I am a manager a country club but I do everything. I’m in charge of outside events and member events, in charge of the front of house staff, scheduling, ordering and membership sales for the club. I feel I am very underpaid at $45k. I do get commission but it’s very low ($10k give or take for the year). I work 6/7 days a week sometimes 10+ hrs/day. I’ve been researching salaries to be able to negotiate higher pay. I want to ask for $60k-is this reasonable?
