I have an employee who is bipolar. She is not consistent with her work and she is not pulling up her weight with important asks. Right now she is failing to fulfill some important commitments in a global pitch. Any advice on how to manage this? She has some talent but she is not delivering and affecting work flow. She was crying all week. Not sure how to approach this, already talked to her early in the week and she assured me she was going to deliver but today im still waiting for the work

If you have a supportive company she should talk to HR. You should not be guessing what is wrong with her. You can suggest to her, without suggesting you think she’s going to have another episode, that she should talk to Hr. Our company would offer therapy resources and short term leave or reasonable accommodations. But it’s dangerous if you try to play that role.

As a bipolar professional, there are highs and lows, I would communicate with the employee about deadlines and ask them how you can help them achieve these tasks under her conditions. She will find motivation through a graceful thoughtful approach, and be more focused when pressure is seemingly a team effort.

How do you know she is bipolar? And even if she is that shouldn’t effect her work in the manner you’ve stated.

She had an episode last year that landed her in a hospital. She then disclosed the diagnosis. My suspicion is that she is on the verge of another one. I feel bad for her but i need to deliver results.

Change staffing asap if you can. I had a similar situation earlier this year and made the argument that a change was needed for the employee’s health. Deadlines don’t go away, but at least this employee was able to do something else for a bit and cool down

I would recommend actually talking to her before removing her because she has a disability and that seems illegal.

Can folks share their experiences of working during 2nd and 3rd trimesters? How hard was it? What accommodations or adjustments did you make? I’m only in my 1st trimester now but will be starting a new job in October (4 months before my due date) and am nervous about not being able to be at my best

Whenever i have a big deadline, my body goes into a panic mode where my energy immediately goes to figuring out how I’ll get something done well and on time. Outwardly, I don’t seem stressed so no one notices but actually I usually feel like I have a cold: fatigue, headache, sore throat, sinus infection. When a task is done, i stop feeling like crap. It’s been like this since law school. Any tips on managing stress or moving towards doing good work without my body shutting down lol?
