I have an opportunity to pivot into a new role that I have been working towards. The opportunity means leaving my current company that I have been w/ for a long time, the money is great but I don’t love the direction of the organization (both strategically and RTO). While everything seems to be falling into place with this new oppy, I am taking a bit of a pay cut and just loaded with reservations/ uncertainty/ fear. Anyone ever get cold feet with a great opportunity?

Last year I took a pay cut to make a move that afforded me more time with my children. I just got my first raise and I'm now making more than I would have 3 years from now at my prior position based solely on the raise (plus I got a bonus at Christmas so that was cool).

I moved from a familiar position, I didn't love it but was doing fine. Made the change based almost solely on RTO policies.

Earlier in the school year when I was on a field trip with my oldest he pulled me aside to tell me it was the best day since he started school and he thanked me for coming. That alone was worth the (apparently, initial) paycut.

Is this role a slightly lower pay but it has more long-term career potential for advancement in a shorter period of time? Have you hit a pay ceiling with your current company? Does your current company have available roles in the career pivot you’re trying to make?

I’m making some assumptions here but you can always make the jump for 3-4 years in the new company and come back at a much higher pay back to your old employer once you’ve been established in the desired career path. Change is scary but you have to remember no risk / no reward. The transition period will be uncomfortable but just tell yourself that this is not the end of your career journey, it’s just a pivot. It’s difficult for someone who’s been very tenured and in a good company to make that jump but sometimes it can be the right move for them in the short term. You don’t have to be “loyal” to this new company the same way you did with your old one, so take everything one step at a time, since noone truly knows what the future will bring. Keep up with the strong network you have built over the years in your old company since it might help you transition back in (should that role/career path be available).

I agree. I took a pay cut for a company that had more opportunity 5 years ago and picked up a second job to do it, and I have nearly doubled my salary since then after the move and gained way more experience. You just have to make sure the grass is the color you want it to be on the other side. But also be realistic about what you have capacity for financially and mentally.

More here - I’m the primary earner in my family so feeling like I’m under so much pressure to make the right move . Less about my career and more about the financials

Yes to all your assumptions and I feel so seen. Thank you 😭💕🙏

Love this story Para1 thank you

I see a red flag in your post. Not loving the direction of the company means that in the near to mid future you may be misaligned via values, goals, etc and this might make the job super stressful, or a fit issue.
Think about the direction a bit more before you jump.

Thanks A1. For clarity I don’t love the directions of my current company- i earn a lot through their stock - but I don’t like a lot of their newer policies and strategies.

The new company is high growth and higher base salary but not stock.

Hey Accenture India any openings for java, i have around 9+ yrs of experience and currently working as project manager at CTS, I am an ex employee of Accenture.

How possible is it to build a US-based career doing global public sector work while not being in New York or DC?

Currently a Manager at Accenture in Public Sector. Living in a progressive US city with a few direct flights to Europe, but definitely not New York or DC. PhD in public affairs. Actually I'm on the hiring roster for a P3 role at the UN.

Considering some life choices that would keep me living where I am though. Debating if this would kill hope of global work.

Is there anything I can do to come up with ideas and make more impact in these meetings? Could there be something I’m not paying attention to? Any advice will be appreciated.
