I have noticed that other minority bowls (based on ethnicity) often have posts about racism they faced and how they are lagging behind because they belong to a certain group. I don’t want to debate on that here. What I want to ask is that I have rarely seen such posts about racism in this bowl. Is it because we don’t face it as much as some of the other races do? Or is there just lesser awareness about reporting it? Or something else? Hoping for constructive discussion.

It’s because we are trained from birth to ignore it and work harder. This is why you don’t see a lot of desis protesting. It’s not because the discrimination isn’t happening. It’s because our solution (which is arguably better in some respects) is to focus on self-improvement and ignore the factors outside of our control. The discrimination is also highly underreported because it doesn’t jive with the dominant narratives that any of the major political outlets from any leaning like to push.

Doesn’t get more accurate than this

The blatant abuse of our offshore folks by their very own onsite and the highlords is well worth a long and sordid tale .

Why don't you make your own movie instead of blaming ABCDs 😳 How can you expect someone else to document your experience

Desis absolutely face discrimination but it pales in comparison to being shot in the streets by public officers. We’re also taught to keep our heads down and just ignore external problems — which we take to heart despite the perpetuation of these issues for future generations this causes.

The reality also is that a vast majority of Indian immigrants, we live in an ‘ desi bubble’ . We live in cushy suburbs with other indians, eat at Indian restaurants, work with Indians at D and hang out with other indians. Unless you live in the city and interact with diverse america, our exposure is honestly limited

I think we all face racism, but its either we become too desensitised or indifferent. For example, hundreds of Indian/Pakistani Muslims had been sent to Guantanamo Bay, Sikhs had been targeted by extremist just because the way they dress, etc etc.

We only talk about this in close circles however is limited to there, and think talking about this openly will somehow affect our careers.

Was there ever a list of people there?

We are on a forum which is full of privileged people even amongst desis in general, so sampling bias is huge.

We have a different form of privilege. Intellectual. Monetary. Social status. It’s different for us. However - Indians do face racism and I feel bad for those who suffer because of this.

Desis have thick skin, ask a desi with dark skin how many times he has been called kalua or a fat person on how many times they were called Motu.

Its good and bad, good in a way it teaches us to accept that society is idiotic and needs to be ignored and bad because its not the right thing to do.

Personally I would rather learn to live with a ability to ignore shit over expecting everyone to be 100% matured

like

I think three obvious points are being missed

1. We desis speak fluent English so it's easier to fit in despite being fresh off the boat.
2. We are also culturally very westernized - our laws are remnants of the Raj, we consume western media, our self-confidence is similar
3. Our worst stereotypes are 7/11 owner or IT technician. Not the worst stereotypes to have.

like

Desis are relatively new to America so what we’ve faced is largely personal / piece meal. Other races have been here much longer and faced systematic racism like Chinese Exclusion Law

like

Definitely have faced racism but it pales in comparison to what some of other races face here. Also, i think we have been be programmed since birth to keep our heads down and march on without being violent or loud about it which is both good and bad. And the last thing which i am not sure how true it is for other minorities but we have a lot of divide amongst ourselves and we do spend some of our energy on that!

I don't think it's valuable to dive into the whole discrimination olympics. Each person's threshold to pain and suffering varies.
That being said, there are ways to improve it. For my own education I have joined my orgs diversity council where I volunteer for events and attend sessions from speakers to understand their journey and challenges.

Some do see such councils to be ineffective and there's a lot of SJW insults thrown around. So if you can weather that, go for it.

We are top1-5% percentile earners. These things don’t matter to us because we have FU money

I am not in big 4.

I am scheduled to fly from NYC to Mumbai via Paris next Wednesday (Jan 5) for a ~10 day trip. Have any of you, your family, friends, etc. flown a similar route (I.e. from US to India via Europe) in the past week? If so, what is the arrival process (Covid test, quarantine requirements, etc.)? I’ve had all recommended vaccine shots and I’m only in Paris for a 2 hour layover (not leaving the airport). Any information on this would be greatly appreciated!
