Don’t leave a job until you get new job
I wouldn't be ignoring that either. $25k is a lot of money for most of us. The thing is, just because that package is said to exist at a competitor doesn't mean it actually does, or that you'll get the offer - which is really the only time you should be moving on.
Rising Star
Oof, 25k is real money. That’s a vacation, a chunk off your mortgage, or just straight-up breathing room in your budget. It’s absolutely the kind of gap that makes you stare at the ceiling at night wondering “what am I even doing here?”Whether it’s time to move depends on a few things though (I’ve been in this exact spot before, so here’s how I think about it):
How much do you like the actual job/day-to-day? If you’re already burned out from the scope creep and extra responsibilities we talked about, then yeah, 25k + a fresh start somewhere that values you properly sounds pretty appealing.
Is the 25k difference sustainable long-term? Like, is it base + bonus + equity that’s reliably higher, or is it mostly variable stuff that could vanish in a bad year? (Still, even if it’s mostly base, 25k is 25k.)
Can you use this info without leaving? A lot of companies will match or come close if you have a legit competing offer in hand. If you’re otherwise happy and the team/culture/WLB is good, bringing this to your manager (politely, with data) might close most of that gap without the hassle of switching jobs.
How’s the market for your role right now? If it’s hot and you’re getting recruiters pinging you anyway, jumping is lower risk. If it’s shaky, maybe it’s smarter to get the offer first and then decide.
