I just got a conditional offer for a Program Analyst position, GS-9, step 1. The pay is decent, but I'm wondering if there's room to negotiate. I know government pay scales are pretty rigid, but I've heard of people successfully getting bumped up a step or two.

Any tips for approaching this conversation? Should I focus on my specific skills and experience, or is there a better angle? I'm in the DC area, if that makes a difference in terms of cost of living arguments. Any advice is appreciated!

The salaries are generally set and you wouldn't have much negotiating opportunity there. But you might be able to negotiate in terms of benefits or terms. If it's feasible for the position, for example, you might negotiate for remote work or a hybrid situation.

Yea just echoing what everyone said above here but in my experience they don't negotiate. I tried when I first started with the government and they told me the pay was set. However I say always negotiate so it doesn't hurt to ask and let them tell you yes or no.

It depends on who you know.

like

You can always negotiate, but be prepared to have a reason for why you are worth the extra money. I would focus on all of the above, skills and experience for making that case. I’ve heard a lot of success stories for pay bumps, but can be dependent on the department too.

It depends on a number of factors. If this is the first government job you have had, the experience doing that kind of job is negotiable. If you have been working as a Program Analyst in another job, you can ask for a step increase. Also, if you are coming from the military doing a similar job, you can get a step increase as well. If you are straight out of college, you should hire on at step 1.

You can write a letter but as others stated please be prepared to have a reason for why you are worth the extra money and be able to support those reasons.

Do Leidos, SAIC, and other mostly-fed consulting businesses pay bonuses to all levels? If so, what does a typical bonus target look like? Booz Allen does not pay bonuses until you get to the Senior Associate level (1 step below Director) and I think that impacts employee performance and work ethic pretty dramatically. I’m wondering if not paying bonuses is common to federal contracting because of how the contracts or priced, or if this is something unique to Booz Allen.

Hi All, I have an urgent query regarding TCS BGC process. My issue is that I have worked in X, Y and Z companies.
In X company I worked for 26months but my pf account is there for last 13months, before that my salary was very low so sometimes I got salary in hand or in pay cheque. I do have salary account statement for most of the months except 3-4 months in between my tenure. Will I face any issue for this?
Note: I do have good relationship with X company.
Please give your valuable suggestions.

I applied to a job at KPMG and did the first two rounds of interviews, general interview, then case study and competency. Never before have I had such a positive feedback at the end of an interview of the 2nd, both said really like me, I did well etc.
It's now been 3 weeks since the interview and I still haven't heard back from the team other than the odd HR email saying they are following up with them. Is there something going on internally, I.e hiring freeze in the London office atm?
