I just got off the phone with my boss. They said they’re changing our titles but everything is the same. It’s because HR wants a different title for us. I’m going from a Business Analyst to a Sr Service Operations Specialist. I feel like that makes it a little more difficult to find a job elsewhere in the future. Yes has anyone had an experience negotiating with job title changes supposedly has more opportunities but how can you be sure?

Don’t change your title on your resume/linkedin..

Ok I’ll take that advice. I just want to know if it’s something that’s better for us or not. But I guess we will see.

Job titles don’t really matter, but your duties and responsibilities do

like

True. There’s just some other lower positions that sound almost the same. And now we’re probably going to do less project support. But I guess I’m fine with that part.

My company is in the middle of doing the same thing to several different groups. There are so many reasons:
- to align similar roles with titles so they can create job descriptions (we do not currently have any)
- differences in pay, they want to create an acceptable range to allow hiring to occur with fewer approval loopholes
- within the payroll system, they want to create automated hierarchy workflows, and they are using job titles rather than individual people to make changes and updates more straight forward.
- they are also using this as a way to staff and show where the open positions are and where overstaffing is.

There are so many reasons, I think for you should ask why, and ask for a copy of the job description to make sure it aligns with what you do. Also, I think Sr Service Operations Specialists sounds way more prestigious than Business Analyst. When looking at future roles, check out the job description and qualifications rather than the job title. And, try to remember that not everything is black and white.

It’s just easier black and white. But you are correct!!!!! Thank you for the insight. My boss did explain it was to align with titles in similar roles. She hasn’t sent the new job description yet tho. We’re waiting.

Just don’t update your title on your resume or LinkedIn. Or update it and make it look like a promotion.

Hmmmm interesting approach. I like it! Thx

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

When I negotiated my comp, all my discussions were around me being a junior and I only accepted my comp for that reason (would not have accepted if I was step above junior since it was low). Negotiations happened with HR, but my offer letter and documents never mention junior (but I have proof from HR saying I am a junior). How do I approach this with my boss as I’m not sure she’s aware I’m actually technically a junior? Revolving around asking for a move up + raise

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!
