Yeah it really seems like most stores have a non-intervention policy now. I'm on the fence about it because I think people should be held accountable but I get that store safety is the most important thing. I just wish we had better security at my store
I had a similar experience. I realized how risky it can be to confront shoplifters directly. I now report incidents rather than intervening physically or escalating on my own.
I don’t understand how people think anymore !! I have pride in any job I’ve ever had! Pride has a sense of ownership, and I take it personally when someone steals from me. This country has become so litigious that nobody thinks they can be held accountable. In my opinion laws for petty theft should be much harder!! The only way to deter people from committing crimes is for them to be afraid to go to jail!! Judges are too lenient. Make examples of people and publicize it!
Honestly.. I have been one of those that breaks protocol and will snack on an item while shopping ( I know..bad me) but I have enough respect for the people that run and manage that store to take my packaging with me and pay for my goods. It's dangerous to confront someone. But fortunately the store I frequent is completely aware of me and my standards and I have never not paid for my snack
I understand the No-Intervention rules alot of companies have these days, but the part that disturbs me is even though those rules are in place, when theft occurs, it is the employees who suffer. They lose bonuses, hours and sometimes even jobs. They really need to decide whether they want no intervention and figure out a way to pad the companys' profits so employees still get bonuses etc or allow them to prevent theft at all costs. Let employees decide if they want to intervene.
I get exactly how you are feeling but sometimes you have to remind yourself that it isn't your merchandise so let them walk out. That is when you call security or the police and have them handle the situation.
Similar experience - I work at a TKMax store. Always loads of theft going on, I saw a young woman, stoned, carrying a new hold all bag over her arm with a new coat draped over the top. I’m not judging, but there’s a 100% chance that they had been recently stolen too. She was stuffing bras into the bag while I stood right next to her, she was so stoned that it was both sad and pathetic. I did what we were told to do at the time, I gave her a freindly smiley hello, asked her if she wanted any help with that and then offered to get her a cart…twice. My manager (yep that’s the one getting paid more than me just watched). The stoner shouted at me to leave her alone, yeah I know it’s just a tactic to get me to back off so that she can carry on stealing. I backed off. The manager watched her from a distance and then did nothing as she and her partner walked out the store loaded with their swag. I was asked to fill in a form that described her appearance…I wrote that she is a 34B. It was my last experience at customer service for customers that are stealing. It’s not worth it! We get paid 10% of any items recovered after an aborted theft. Sometimes it can be a couple of hundred dollars, but it’s not worth it.
