I just resigned from my job in a neighboring district. The kids were great, but the daily three-hour round-trip commute is just too much. Now I'm feeling the pressure to find something for next year, and I haven't had any luck yet. For those of you who've been through this, when do the majority of teaching positions usually get posted? Am I behind the curve if I'm not in full application mode already, or is there still time?

I would get going as soon as possible, especially if you're in a particularly specialized content area. Statistically, I don't know exactly when the majority of job postings are made, but this does ramp up this time of year. I would also recommend searching for a job year-round, not just at the end of the school year, as you never know when an opportunity will come along.

From my experience, retiree positions are posted earliest, sometimes before the end of the school year. After that it becomes like the game of musical chairs. True story: the superintendent retired who was replaced by promoting the asst superintendent who was replacing by promoting a building principal who was replaced by promoting an asst principal who was replaced by “promoting” a classroom teacher who was replaced by an external hire. This whole process took over two months which was quick because it was most internal. My point is this: it may be late summer before the dust settles. It’s tough being patient. I landed in my current district two days before school started after a long and very anxious summer. Hang in there.

From my own experience, a lot of districts start posting heavily between late March and May, especially after contract renewals go out. You're not behind yet, but you'll want to definitely start applying since we're in the thick of hiring season. Keep checking weekly, especially district HR pages. Things can move fast, but there’s still time.

I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?
