I know we’re supposed to be out there “building our brand” and “expanding our network,” but honestly? I’d rather do back-to-back depositions than make small talk over flat wine and lukewarm cheese cubes. I never know what to say, and it all feels forced. Am I missing something? Has anyone figured out how to make these events less awkward?

I just try to do the bare minimum business development to stay in good standing. It’s okay to just do the work—especially if you are okay with never making shareholder or going in house. Give yourself some credit for doing it when you can and then be at peace with it.

Do great work and build deep relationships with your clients (even if you’re a midlevel). Then, those people eventually will be in decision-making roles and can give you work without you pounding the pavement. The biggest rainmakers generally, and in L&E particularly, are not out just randomly networking. They are sought out because they do great work and get results.

My approach to life is be a good person, do good work, and don’t be an ass. It’s not a fancy or glam type way to be known but I’ve found it’s worked well for me and my conscience

What temperature would you prefer the cheese to be at?

In all seriousness, when in doubt ask questions about the person you’re talking to. Many people like to talk about themselves.

What is considered a “large” caseload in employment litigation? I work at a large L&E boutique law firm and handling about 14-15 active litigation cases in state/federal court or arbitration. Some of these matters are multi-plaintiff and multi-defendant cases, but none are class actions. This does not include any matters I am handling in the charge stage or in pre-litigation. Not sure if that’s a typical caseload or not?

I have a governmental entity client in Texas that wants to offer 6 weeks of paid parental leave for all employees, even those who aren’t eligible for FMLA. After the paid 6 weeks, the employee can choose to continue paid leave using any accrued personal leave.

Texas does not have a paid parental leave statute.

If paid leave above what is required is offered for parents, do we also have to provide the same benefit to other employees that are eligible for unpaid leave?

Case load= malpractice? Small plaintiff’s firm of 25 attorneys. I was a 2 year associate hired and given 50 active files in pre litigation status. 9 mos later a partner quit and I inherited 45 more. I got up to 105 files. Now I hover at 85 active files in varying stages of pre lit. I asked managing partner for help and was told to settle more claims to lessen my load. Is this what people consider negative work culture?

I’m working at an insurance defense firm, trying to target my practice to L&E. I’m overworked and underpaid, but gaining valuable experience I hope to pivot toward an eventual in-house counsel position. I recently was offered an opportunity to lateral to a national firm for a significant pay increase (150% salary increase, much better benefits, hybrid WFH options). Problem-I would be shifting gears to Toxic Tort. I’m torn between my passion and the money. I’m a second year associate. WWYD?

Hello, I’m an associate (almost at the one year mark) at a midsize firm on the EPL team. I did about 2 years of employment law as a clerk during school and know that’s what I want to go into. I’ve asked for more EPL work but keep catching PI cases. I second-chaired an employment trial but don’t see any EPL work for the foreseeable future and wasn’t getting as much EPL exposure as I wanted before the trial. Any advice on a lateral move to a bigger firm with a broader range of EPL work?

Need advice - I've been talking to a Partner contact at a big-4 firm where I REALLY want to work. She sent my info to the managing partner in my city, but I haven't heard anything for about 3 weeks. Been playing it cool because I know these things can take time, BUT, I just got let go from my current firm. I have til 12/15 to find a new job.

Do I tell her my timeline is now a month, or is telling them I'm getting fired going to tank my chances of getting the job?
